THE RETURN OF COATLICUE

In the precolombian civilizations, the snake ("coatl" in aztec) was the incarnation of the fith day of the calendar. For people who are born under this sign, the symbolism goes on to be mainly negative because the "coatl" has no home and is very poor. On the other hand, in Mexico, "Coatlicue" is the name of the goddess mother of all gods who gave birth to Quetzalcoatl and Xolotl.
She is called also "Mother Goddess of the Earth who gives birth to all celestial things", "Goddess of Fire and Fertility", "Goddess of Life, Death and Rebirth", and "Mother of the Southern Stars".

And so the symbolism of "Coatl" comes back this week in Colombia (north-western South America) thanks to the discovery by an international team of scientists of the remains of a giant snake fossil, at 15 meters under the ground, in an open sky coal mine at the North-East of Colombia. It was living during the Paleocene Epoch, a 10-million-year period after dinosaurs extinction.

This real boa constrictor is longer as a shool bus (45 feet long) and weights around 1,25 tons. This monstruous animal has been baptized "Titanoboa cerrejonensis", which means "titanic boa of Cerrejon". This creature was used to feed itself from ancestors of our modern crocodile. It makes part of the boa constrictors family and behaved more like an anaconda, living mainly into the water. It could crawl on ground but also swim.

If this animal tried "to go into my office to eat me, it would have had a big problem to pass through the door" , said Jason Head, Paleontologist from the University of Toronto Missisauga.

Titanoboa was living into an equatorial climate much hotter than today and it has been reported that the exceptional size of this snake was related to the heat of its environment.
