Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was one of the most important XIX century French writers. His works marked the French literature and the contemporary thought. One of his novels, "Notre Dame de Paris" is known throughout the world but does somebody remember that this great author was addicted to spiritism?

Exiled on the island of Jersey by Napoleon III, he was initiated in 1853 to spiritism and learned how to turn the tables calling for the deads and communicating with them, specially with his daughter recently died.

For Victor Hugo poets were also clearsighted ones and he was opened to this kind of phenomena. Moreover, he believed firmly into reincarnation. He was used to try in contact whith the ghost of his daughter, Leopoldine.

Charles Hugo, his son together with the poet Auguste Vacquerie participated regularly themselves to these supernatural meetings, too. Vacquerie reported that he was initially dubitative but was quickly convinced when he heard himself the voice of Leopoldine. All the persons were impressed and submerged by the emotion. During days, he made nothing else giving up even to feed himself for avoiding to stop the seances of spiritism.

The intellectual acuity of the assisters of these seances impeeds the sceptics to have any doubt for a possible trickery.
