MUMMIES AND DEATH WORSHIP

The myth of the mummy is related to our fear of death.

The technic of embalming corpses is a Babylonian and Assyrian inherance. But in fact, they are the old Egyptians who brought this technic at the level of art that we know with some
mummies found in Egypt and preserved in the famous museums of Cairo, London and Paris.

Due to the lack of the necessary cares brought to their corpses, the Egyptians feared their spirit could suffer in the Great beyond and could not return on earth for revival. According them, if not prepared after their death, the wandering souls would never find neither
rest, nor subsistence in the Heaven. Because of this situation, they have to return to haunt the alive ones, under the form of a dead-alive, named "Kama-rupa". Under this putrid form, the dead-alive was used to
quest for any types of feeding: faeces, urine, brackish water or carcasses of animals. He attacked also the alives for their blood and vital energy. When Egypt fell to the hands of Persia, around 550 before Christ, the importance given to the preservation of corpses fell.

This antic believe gave credit to the famous american movie "The Mummy".

The practise of embalming has been performed by a lot of peoples:

the Aleutians, in the Aleutian Islands,

the Guanches, in the Canary Islands,

 the Quechuas, in Peru,

 the Chuchuros in Chile,

 the Anazazi in North America,

 the Dani in New Guinea

The arrival of Christianism induced an inversion of these antic values: from now on, the corpses have to undergo a complete decomposition
for claiming for eternal life.

But it is since the 19th century that we assist to the revival and the growing up of this antic practise, particularly in North America, where nowadays embalming is usual and admitted simply because people go on wanting to be reassured in front of death.

During thousand of years, mummies have been victim of infamous traffics: mummified corpses were cut or reduced in powder for pharmacopea or infamous witchcraft practicses or simply to end in worldwide museums.
