And so, at the beginning of Jan.-09, a woman in rural Papua New Guinea was bound and gagged, tied to a log and burned because villagers suspected her of being a witch, police said. Her death adds to a growing list of men and women who have been accused of sorcery and then tortured or killed in the South Pacific island nation, where traditional beliefs hold sway in many regions. The country’s Post-Courier newspaper reported Thursday that more than 50 people were killed in two Highlands provinces last year for allegedly practicing sorcery.

Last year, even a pregnant woman has been the victim of villagers who hung her to a tree, accusing her of sorcery because her neighbor suddenly died. She gave birth to her baby hung on the tree. Fortunately she and her baby survived.

In recent years, because AIDS are increasing dramaticaly in this country, ignorant people blame witches for the deaths, not the virus.

One thousand years after the great religious hunting for witches in Europe during the Middle Age, women go on to be killed for superstitions.
