DE VERMIS MYSTERIIS

DE VERMIS MYSTERIIS July 9th, 2010 – Do you love worms? you know, these small crawling ground creatures which nauseate you but which are so primarily linked to life, your life. Of cause, I speak about worms, maggots, leeches, larvae of all kinds… Only in Europe, 350 species of ground worms exist currently and I do not speak about the other small microscopic creatures which surround us and introduce themselves in our foods for finishing in our stomach, blood and intestines…. awaiting our death to transform themselves as vermin and woodlice thanks to the putrefaction of the rotten flesh of our corpses!

Happy show would you say which charms the amateurs and writers of horror and science fiction. And so, Edgar POE, wrote at his time “The Conqueror WORM”, H.P. LOVECRAFT was haunted during all his life by the myth of the worm and saw himsef at the end of his life, corroded by a cancer of the intestines which destroyed him inside such a worm and Robert Bloch also, who wrote “Psychosis” and made the scenario of this famous movie directed by Hitchcock, wrote about the “Mysteries of the WORM”, a fictional black book incorporated by H.P. Lovecraft into the lore of the Cthulhu Mythos. There are other writers who have being haunted by the myth of the worm but this list does not want to be exhaustive but representative about one great myth of horror.

Here are for horror and science fiction, now it is time to come back to reality.

It was generally admitted till today that the first forms of life appeared on earth 3,5 billion years ago thanks to organizations composed of one cell, like bacteria. The multicellular complex which is at the origin of human life, was for its part, estimated at 670 million years ago.

But here is that a geobiologist of the French University of Poitiers, Mr. Abderrazak El Albani, attached to CNRS (National Research Scientific Center) discovered with his team some Gabonese fossils which "push back the cursor of 1,5 billion years”. His team thus exhumed more than 250 fossils of 7 millimeters to 12 cm length, which upset completely the history of the alive world. They are the oldest eucaryotes never discovered. These eucaryotes are cells with chromosomes sheltered in the core which compose the complex living beings, since the insects to us, the human beings. Their forms represent some organizations which lived in suspension in water or very close to the oceanic bottom, without shell, nor skeleton, a kind of gelatinous beings, similar to the worms. These creatures lived whereas the atmosphere on the ground was unbreathable and toxic.

And so, all school handbooks speaking about the origin of life which dated it to 670 million years are thus to be re-examined and the cursor of our origins has to be pushed back of 1,5 billion of years, too.

Well... from now on, pay attention, my dear small creatures, when you are walking in your garden, you can inadvertently crush one of your cousins, the lombric together with some other parents, such the maggots and the larvae… If you felt alone some days ago, from now on, you are not alone anymore because you belong to a big family… which is surrounding you everywhere till your death and which will be your last companions into the grave cleaning your old skeleton. If your think that incineration will avoid you of this end, you are mistaken. Indeed, the scattered dust of your incinerated bodies either if they are dropped into the water or spread on the ground will be eaten finally by animals and from their droppings will be born worms and larvae too, which will participate for new forms of lifes! To some extent, it is a kind of reincarnation by the worm...

From now on, the main question to solve remains for religious people: how they are going to explain this new parentship with worms, if not by the negation and the refusal of this new reality. The choice is yours!

The Conqueror Worm
by Edgar Allan Poe (1843)

Lo! 'tis a gala night
Within the lonesome latter years!
An angel throng, bewinged, bedight
In veils, and drowned in tears,
Sit in a theatre, to see
A play of hopes and fears,
While the orchestra breathes fitfully
The music of the spheres.

Mimes, in the form of God on high,
Mutter and mumble low,
And hither and thither fly-
Mere puppets they, who come and go
At bidding of vast formless things
That shift the scenery to and fro,
Flapping from out their Condor wings
Invisible Woe!

That motley drama- oh, be sure
It shall not be forgot!
With its Phantom chased for evermore,
By a crowd that seize it not,
Through a circle that ever returneth in
To the self-same spot,
And much of Madness, and more of Sin,
And Horror the soul of the plot.

But see, amid the mimic rout
A crawling shape intrude!
A blood-red thing that writhes from out
The scenic solitude!
It writhes!- it writhes!- with mortal pangs
The mimes become its food,
And seraphs sob at vermin fangs
In human gore imbued.

Out- out are the lights- out all!
And, over each quivering form,
The curtain, a funeral pall,
Comes down with the rush of a storm,
While the angels, all pallid and wan,
Uprising, unveiling, affirm
That the play is the tragedy, "Man,"
And its hero the Conqueror Worm.

Prophetic don't you believe?
At terrificator’s, we know that daily life is worse than your worst nightmare !
